quote, william barrett, time of need, 5

But without straying into the thickets of political controversy, we have more philosophic reasons to doubt that these powers of information will exempt us from the blindness of the past. Systems of information and precisely to the degree that they seek to become more scientific-tend to lock themselves inside their own treadmill. The information will be more reliable the more it deals with hard facts. The harder the fact the more objective and measurable it must be; and thus the fact, to become sheer fact, must exclude everything that is not measured by its own self-imposed standards. So the fact becomes external, and therefore abstract. And the man perpetually buzzing after information usually misses what is really happening, especially in himself. That has been taking place in another region al- together-behind his back.
